Charles Dickens' “A Christmas Carol” playing at Hartford Stage is a must see!  Every aspect of this performance is enchanting and delightful.  Most of us know the story of the old grinch named Ebenezer Scrooge and his miserly, unloving life, and how he comes face to face with the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.

Artistic Director, Darko Tresnjak, says, “A Christmas Carol transports us to a world of the imagination – of ghosts and time travel and magical transformations.  It reminds us, in ways only the theatre can, of our un-jaded altruism, our youthful hopefulness, and our child-like sense of justice.  A wonderful legacy, I think.  When I was a child growing up in Yugoslavia, we were not allowed to publicly celebrate Christmas.  Our school breaks did not coincide with religious holidays.  Every year, a few days before Christmas, my mother would head to my school and promptly inform my teachers that Darko would be sick (again!) this year.  She would keep me out of school and my family would celebrate Christmas in private.  I am happy to live in a country where we can celebrate our holidays publicly and I look forward to joining all of you this season at our fourteenth production of ‘A Christmas Carol.’”

Everything involving this production was first class.  There were 28 child actors for 12 parts in this production and the three most impressive – although the others were impressive – were Tiny Tim (Lorenzo Dalton and Ethan Pancoast), “Ignorance” (Ankit Roy and Fred Thornley IV,  and “Want” (Tiana N. Bailey and Kati Rice).  In total, there were 47 cast members in this delightful, whimsical, hilariously humorous play.

Ebenezer added a delightful flavor of humor to his role and many actors played more than one role.  From the entrance to the ushers, to the lighting, costumes, scene changes, choreography, snow falling in the entire theatre, this is one of the season’s best.  Take my word!  Please, take your family and friends to this delightful display of talent.  “A Christmas Carol: a ghost story of Christmas” will not disappoint.
